A 19-year-old student is recovering after she was allegedly stabbed by her boyfriend on the campus of a Capital Region college Thursday, Nov. 3.
Emergency crews in Rensselaer County were called to Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) in Troy shortly after noon after several people called 911 reporting that a female student had been stabbed in a campus parking lot, Troy Police Assistant Chief Steven Barker said.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including Troy Police, Hudson Valley Public Safety, North Greenbush Police, and New York State Police.
The victim was taken to Albany Medical Center with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries. There were no additional reports of injuries.
Police said surveillance footage showed the suspect, identified as 20-year-old Zymiere Walton, of Albany, immediately fled the campus in a vehicle after the attack and there was no further danger to students or staff.
Walton was arrested a short time later in Albany. He’s facing charges of first-degree assault and robbery, both felonies.
Barker said the incident is being investigated as a domestic dispute.
“Our detectives will ensure the victim is supported by our local NYS Crime Victims Resources personnel and resources,” Barker said. “Our thoughts remain with the victim as she hopefully makes a swift and speedy recovery.”
In a post on Twitter at around 1:40 p.m., the college announced that the campus was closed and all classes had been canceled effective 2 p.m.
The college was also making counseling services available for those who need it. Students and staff were encouraged to contact the college’s Counseling Center at 518-629-7320.
